Education

A Tudor Merchant's House, Saint Nicolas Church and the Old Grammar School constitute the largest and best preserved collection of Medieval and Tudor buildings in Birmingham with over 900 years of fascinating history.

Ideal for school visits, Saint Nicolas Place caters for various Key Stages with cross curricular and hands on activities. There's a comfortable dining area, shop, and a café for snacks and plenty of space to eat al fresco in warm weather.

School groups will be escorted around the complex by trained period costumed staff, on hand to lead your visit and bring the story of the buildings vividly to life. Children can engage in hands on activities such as Tudor dancing, artefact handling and dressing in period costume. We're happy to meet teachers and discuss requirements at a free preliminary visit.

Indulge your pupils in a living history experience where they can become Tudors, Victorians or WW2 air raid wardens for the day!

History and Learning
Inspire your pupils with the Tudor Merchant's House, a large, high status merchant's house built by a man who made his fortune from the wool trade. See the features of a Tudor building including original timbers and exposed wattle and daub. Discover what jetties are and view the faint remains of Tudor interior decorations, all of which have survived for over five hundred years.

In the Queen's Room students can admire a 16th century fireplace, chimney and the original floorboards of a room that was fit for a queen in 1643.

At the Old Grammar School students will experience the feel of a Tudor school, including learning to write with a quill pen and reciting Latin. In the Old Grammar School recycling is nothing new! Our ancestors made wall panels from doors, tables from church fittings and windows from another building.

In use from Tudor times to the Victorian period and into the 1900’s, the Old Grammar School has been, and will continue to be a place of learning. The magnificent, ancient church of Saint Nicolas tells its own stories of great change over the centuries and its effect on the lives of local people.
